Ozempic Injections
Ozempic
Due to the discourse on social media, Ozempic (Type II Diabetes) and Wegovy (Weight Loss) are the hottest drug in South Africa now. Ozempic is made by Danish Company Novo Nordisk – and worth more that Coca-Cola and McDonalds combined. Hormones are the body’s messengers. GLP-1 is a digestive hormone naturally produced in the body.
GLP-1 is the hormone that tells us we are full (released at the end of a meal). Our body naturally produces this hormone. Ozempic mimics’ that hormone. The main active ingredient in Ozempic is Semaglutide. It thus regulates appetite at the level of the central nervous system. What is the big difference between the two? The natural hormone has a half-life of 2 minutes, whilst Ozempic extends that to a full week. GLP-1 stimulates the release of insulin and inhibits the release of glucagon. It reduces appetite (in the brain) and slows down gastric motility.
How it works:
Ozempic mimics a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which:
Increases insulin secretion when blood sugar is high.
Reduces the amount of sugar your liver makes.
Slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach, making you feel full longer.
In 2020, 4.9 million prescriptions were issued in the USA – that means 1/8 adult Americans have tried Semaglutide to reverse diabetes or lose weight. 60,000 prescriptions are written on a weekly basis. Although pricey, it received initial FDA approval for a daily micro dosage application in 2005. This was changed to a higher, weekly dose in 2022. Trials claim that patients lose up to 15% of their body weight using the product (this trial included exercise with the Semaglutide). The same trial boasting about the 15% also said that “the continued use of glp-1 receptor agonists (Semaglutide) is needed to support maintenance of weight loss”.
Please read this again: If NO lifestyle modification took place whilst on Ozempic, 90% of users will regain the weight they lost while using the product.
Ozempic was initially FDA approved (2005) for Type II diabetes patients. Wegovy was approved for weight loss specifically. The biggest take away for me whilst researching the topic was the term called ‘half-life’. A hormone is a messenger in your body. When you are full after a meal, it sends a message to the brain to acknowledge that. It activates insulin to deal with the meal you just finished and inhibits gastric motility. The release of insulin lowers your blood glucose. The half-life of the hormone GLP-1 is two minutes. The half-life of Semaglutides, which mimics the function of the hormone GLP-1 is 7 days.
Hence a warning. Surprise – a BLACK BOX warning. Apart from ‘normal’ side effects like nausea, gallstones, vomiting, GI, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, gastroparesis and constipation it can cause thyroid cancer. It can also result in muscle loss; and the advice on that is to do strength training whilst on Ozempic + eating more proteins.
Most on Ozempic continues with their ‘SAD’ lifestyle – Standard American Diet. They keep on eating as before, because their HBA1C score is coming down and they are losing weight. But what weight exactly is being lost? Muscle loss and connective tissue is being lost as well – hence the term ‘Ozempic Face’.
Mounjaro is currently being ‘fast tracked’ by the FDA to accommodate high demand of Ozempic and Wegovy. A new drug, called Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is claiming better results than Ozempic and Wegovy. Currently there are no long-term safety data on the drug. Tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro) is a newer medication like Ozempic but with a bit of a twist — it targets two hormones instead of one.
Ozempic Craze: Weekly Jab Mimics Fullness Hormone, Cuts Weight

Novo Nordisk – the Danish company that produces Ozempic, has a higher turnover than Denmark’s total GDP. Is semaglutides like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ter-ze-pa-tide safe for use?
How it works:
It mimics two gut hormones:
GLP-1 (like Ozempic) – helps with insulin release and satiety.
GIP – works alongside GLP-1 to improve blood sugar and might enhance fat metabolism.
You ARE the experiment. We find GLP-1 receptors in various places in the body, including the heart and kidney. We do not know the effects of Ozempic on these organs long term. Whilst on Ozempic, we also produce less gastric juices – less acid means our immune system is weaker. What will be the long-term effect of this?
Also known as ‘the skinny jab’.
How it’s taken:
It’s a once-weekly injection. You inject it under the skin (usually the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm)

Testosterone
Testosterone is a hormone that is produced primarily in the testicles for men and the ovaries and adrenal glands for women. This hormone is essential to the development of male growth and masculine characteristics. For women, testosterone comes in much smaller amounts. Testosterone production increases about 30 times more during adolescence and early adulthood. After early adulthood, it’s natural for levels to drop slightly each year.

HBA1C Score
In diabetes mellitus, excessive glucose builds up in the blood due to insulin resistance or deficiency, often detected through the HbA1c test—which reflects average blood sugar over time by measuring how much glucose binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. While an HbA1c under 5.7% is ideal, higher levels indicate prediabetes (5.7–6.4%) or diabetes (6.5%+), increasing risks of organ damage and other complications.
